Frequently Asked Questions

We would like to tell you about some of our frequently asked questions...however, please do not hesitate to call us about any further inquiries!!!

What medications should I avoid when I tan?

Usually if there is a problem with sun exposure and medicine, there will be a warning label on your prescription. Acne medication, antibacterial medication, antibiotics, anticancer medication, antidepressants, anti-inflammatory medication, antiparasitic medication, birth control, diabetes medication, diuretic, psorlen, and tranquilizing medications can all cause a photosensitivity reaction. Please ask your doctor about tanning when on any kind of medication!

Do I have to wear goggles?

Your eyelids offer almost no protection against UV light, so the answer is YES...you should be wearing protective eyewear when tanning!!! If you choose not to use them, you are only putting yourself at risk for developing cataracts, loss of night vision, difficulty seeing colors, etc. These are serious effects that can easily be prevented by wearing protective eyewear. For those of you who wear contacts, you do not need to take them out if you wear protective eyewear. We offer several varieties of eyewear....disposable Winkease ($0.50), Peepers ($3.75), and SunGlobes ($5.35).

Why does a tan fade?

Skin cells are constantly reproducing and renewing themselves, as they do this, they push the old cells to they top of the skin and the old cells fall off. The old cells were the ones you tanned-- so you must continuously tan the new cells to keep your dark color.

What can I do to keep my tan?

MOISTURIZE! Moisturizing your skin every day and night is extremely important when trying to keep your tan. When your skin starts to peel or even the top layer of your skin cells come off,  you loose your tan. A daily moisturizer will slow down this process, meaning your tan will last longer.

If I tan in the nude...can I contract a disease?

NO!! Oakland Oasis uses a very strong germicidal disinfectant (which is also EPA approved) and it kills all germs from the previous tanner. Our promise to you is that our beds are all very well sanitized before each use.

Will indoor tanning protect me from sunburn?

Not necessarily. One popular reason for tanning is to get a base tan before exposure to the outdoors. Indoor tanning does not guarantee that you will not burn, but a base tan may help to prevent it.
